09/12/23 Celebrate National Play-Doh Day (9.16)

September 16th is National Play-Doh Day, and the Fab Lab is here to help you celebrate with an easy recipe for Homemade Non-Toxic Eco-Friendly Play Dough. Playdough is a great tool for developing fine motor skills, enhancing hand-eye coordination, encouraging creativity, and improving social skills. And a family that plays together, grows together.

Warning/Caution

Parental supervision for the stove, let the play dough cool before giving it to the children

Ages

Time

10-15 minutes

SUPPLIES + MATERIALS 

1 cup of flour

½ cup of salt

1 tablespoon of oil (have a little extra on hand for moistness)

½ cup Cream of tartar (estimated) 

½ cup Water

Pot 

Mixing spoon

Stove (medium to medium-high)

Fragrance (Ground cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, pumpkin/apple pie spices)

Food coloring

STEPS 

  1. Add 1 cup of flour

  2. Add ½ cup of salt.

  3. Add 1 tablespoon of oil.

  4. Add a ½ cup Cream of tartar (estimated measurement).

  5. Add ½ cup Water.

  6. Mix the ingredients all together.

  7. Turn on the stove to medium to medium-high.

  8. Put the mixture on the stove and begin stirring constantly for about 5 minutes.

  9. Take the pot off of the stove and let the mixture cool.

  10. Add additional ingredients like food coloring or spices.

  11. Play away, play with it as is, or grab your favorite toys and accessories.
